Hand Therapy

Our hands serve many purposes.  They help us eat, dress, write, earn a living, create art, and do many other activities.  To do these tasks and activities, our hands require sensation and movement, such as joint motion, tendon gliding, and muscle contraction.  When a problem takes place in the upper extremity, care must be given to all the different tissues that make function of our hand and upper extremity possible.

We specialize in the treatment of patients who have been affected by an accident or trauma leaving them with wounds, scars, burns, injured tendons or nerves, fractures, or even amputations of the fingers, hands, or arms.  Others include patients who suffer from the effects of conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow, as well as such chronic problems as arthritis or a neurological condition (ie. Stroke/CVA).

Here at John West Therapy Services you will receive the most comprehensive care possible in order to return back to your true occupation of living. Hand therapy helps a patient regain maximum use of his or her shoulder, elbow, forearm, hand, or thumb after injury, surgery or the onset of a disease or illness.  Care/Treatment is provided by an Occupational Therapist who is specialized in hand therapy and the treatment of the upper extremity who teaches exercises, applies modalities, performs advanced manual techniques to change tissue quality, and creates custom orthotics or splints to help the extremity heal and protect it from additional injury and sometimes to help assist with mobilization of a stiff joint. We also teach the patient how to be as independent as they can with their disability with the use of adaptive equipment or through joint protection and energy conservation techniques.

Hand/Occupational Therapy is now available in two locations:

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy programs improve fine motor skills, especially of the hand and arm.  A major focus of occupational therapy is rehabilitation related to impairments of the upper extremity (i.e., shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand), and 85% of certified hand therapists are occupational therapy professionals.  But whether in a specialized hand clinic, general rehabilitation clinic, or acute care setting, the role of occupational therapy in upper extremity rehabilitation is to return the client to meaningful participation in his or her daily activities and help people of all ages develop and maintain their ability to perform tasks and roles essential to productive living, including self-care, leisure and work. Through activity analysis, the occupational therapist is able to address each client’s priorities, along with his or her pathologies, with activity modifications and compensatory techniques to facilitate performing at his or her greatest level of independence from the start, and at every step of the rehabilitation process. This independence encourages integration of the affected upper extremity as soon as possible, thereby making the journey to maximal function seamless.

Occupational therapy interventions are designed to meet individual client needs and may include the following as part of a comprehensive plan of care:

• Therapeutic activities

• Therapeutic exercise

• Orthosis design, fabrication, fitting, and training

• Joint protection and/or energy modification in home, work, school, or leisure activities

• Mirror therapy

• Scar management

• Pain management

• Training in activities of daily living and adaptive or assistive devices

• Education for post-surgical or post-injury safety, including sensory loss
